Late Breaking Updates and Notes for Wednesday, March 29
Left wing P.J. Axelsson didn't make the trip to Buffalo but he's hoping he'll be able to accompany his teammates to Montreal this weekend. Axelsson, who has been out of the lineup since suffering a knee injury March 1 against Carolina, said he'll have some contact drills today. "I'm going to try some bumps," said Axelsson. "They're going to throw me around a little bit. We'll see how that goes." -Boston Globe
Ducks defensemen Vitaly Vishnevski and Scott Niedermayer escaped serious injury despite each being involved in a dangerous play Tuesday night. Vishnevski blocked a shot by Colorado center Joe Sakic in the second period, only to have the puck carom off his own stick and hit him just below the nose. "The visor saved my nose," said Vishnevski, who added the extra piece of protective equipment earlier this season. "It hit the visor first. It's OK. It's hockey."... Niedermayer was skating up the left-wing boards when he took a check and struck his left thigh against an open door in front of the Ducks bench in the third period. After going down, Niedermayer attempted to walk off the pain and returned to the game less than two minutes later. "It'll be interesting to see how it is Wednesday," Niedermayer said. "It's tight already."
Goalie Hannu Toivonen participated in a hard skate for the second straight day and will see how a third day goes before drawing any conclusions on the status of his sprained ankle. Toivonen last played Jan. 5. He said he'd like to make it into some game action before the season ends. "I'm looking forward to the time when I feel comfortable enough to play," said Toivonen. "It should be sooner or later." - Boston Globe
Forward Tuomo Ruutu said he is making progress in his recovery from a partially severed tendon in his right ankle. Yawney sees it in the way Ruutu is skating. "He's hungry and wants to play," Yawney said. "He's a big boy. He'll make the call when he thinks he's ready. He's mentioned to me that he'd like to play center. OK, I'll meet him halfway on that." - Chicago Sun Times
Injured forward Bill Guerin (fractured orbital bone) hopes to start skating by the end of the week and probably will join the team on its trip to Anaheim and Los Angeles. However, Tippett said he does not expect Guerin to play in either game. - Dallas Morning News
Center Joe Nieuwendyk's right eye was swollen nearly shut Tuesday after he was cut just above it by Bruins defenseman Brad Stuart's stick the night before. Nieuwendyk didn't practice, but said he thinks he'll be able to play tonight. "We'll see how he is," Martin said. "Hopefully his vision is back and the swelling is down so it won't affect him." - Sun Sentinel
Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester also sported a black eye, though it didn't look nearly as bad as Nieuwendyk's and didn't keep him from practicing. Bouwmeester suffered a gash just below his left eye when, he said, Marco Sturm caught him with a high stick. - Sun Sentinel
The Ottawa Senators lost D Chris Phillips at the end of the first period of their game against New Jersey when he twisted his left knee. He didn't return.
Edmonton RW Ales Hemsky left Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Minnesota after one shift in the second period with a strained lower back.
