Late Breaking Updates and Notes for Thursday, March 30
Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Ed Belfour was at practice on Thursday, telling reporters he plans to undergo back surgery next week. Belfour, who has not spoken publicly since the team informed everyone that he was done for the season, has been the topic of much speculation that he quit on the team.
The Ottawa Senators will be without defenseman Wade Redden tonight when they meet the New York Rangers. He has returned home for family reasons. Brad Norton has been recalled to replace him. The Senators are already missing Zdeno Chara and Chris Phillips on the blue line... Martin Havlat has been cleared for contact but not to play in games. He has to meet doctors again on April 10th. So he might get in a game or 2 before the playoffs.
Marco Sturm, one-third of Boston's most potent offensive line, couldn't suit up in last night's 4-3 loss to the Sabres because of flu symptoms. Glen Murray moved up to the top combination with Bergeron and Boyes to start the game. - Boston Globe
Bruins defenseman Brian Leetch suffered an apparent head injury when he was elbowed by Buffalo Sabres forward Daniel Briere midway through the second period of a 4-3 B's loss last night. Leetch was about to step off the ice on a change when he was clubbed. He lay stunned in the doorway for several seconds. Remarkably, only Leetch drew a penalty on the play, incurring a slashing minor. - Boston Herald
Tuomo Ruutu said he definitely will not return in the next week and will consult with the doctors before returning from his January ankle surgery. It's possible he could play a handful of games before the end of the season. Coach Trent Yawney said he'd like to play Ruutu at center when he comes back, perhaps to see if he can be a bona fide No. 1 center. - Chicago Tribune
Although a longshot, Avalanche defenseman Ossi Vaananen hasn't ruled out a return to the lineup for the playoffs. Vaananen had a walking boot removed Wednesday from his surgically repaired left ankle, and said he is "way ahead of schedule" in his rehabilitation. The Finnish veteran suffered multiple fractures to bones in the ankle, and several screws were inserted as part of the surgery. The screws will be taken out by next season. - Denver Post
Joe Sakic has an eight-game points streak (six goals, nine assists). Andrew Brunette has produced eight points (four goals, four assists) in the past five games. And Milan Hejduk has totaled eight points (four goals, four assists) in his past seven games. - Rocky Mountain News
Pavol Demitra, who had surgery to repair a broken nose, has been cleared to resume skating. - LA Times
Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist set a record of his own in Wednesday nights win. The 24-year-old Swede set a team record for victories by a rookie when he posted his 30th of the season, passing Johnny Bower (1953-54) and Jim Henry (1941-42).
Reports out of St. Louis and Canada suggest Rangers broadcaster John Davidson will be the next Blues president, now that former Madison Square Garden president Dave Checketts and ex-MSG Network president Mike McCarthy have an agreement to purchase the club. Davidson said last night he has not been contacted and is not pursuing the post. - Rockland Journal News
Republican gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann threw his support behind a gambling company's plan to build an arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins if the company wins a state gambling license. - Philadelphia Inquirer
Defenseman Kim Johnsson (concussion symptoms) skated for 30 minutes Wednesday. There is still no return date, however, and when asked if he believed Johnsson would be back for the playoffs, coach Ken Hitchcock said, "I have no idea." - Philadelphia Daily News
Coyotes left wing Tyson Nash and is flirting with the first no-goal season of his six-year NHL career. Nash, who has missed 27 games because of injuries and was a healthy scratch once, entered the season averaging 5.4 goals per year after his first five NHL seasons. - Arizona Republic
Shane Doan scored just six goals in the season's first 35 games, yet the second-year captain will set a career-high for goals scored in a season the next time he lights the lamp. Coincidence or not, Doan has been a different player since he was named to Canada's Olympic team in December, and enters tonight's game with 27 goals, including 10 in the 13 games played since the Games. - Arizona Republic
The stitch-covered mask of former Boston netminder Gerry Cheevers fetched $24,596.36 at a recent auction of hockey memorabilia. At the same event, a jersey worn by Hall of Famer Ken Dryden with the Canadiens in 1972-73 sold for $37,782.10 - CNNSI
