Late Breaking Updates and Notes for Friday, March 31
The trade for left wing Jeff Friesen has yet to have the desired effect for the Mighty Ducks. Friesen, acquired from the Washington Capitals at the March 9 trade deadline, has two points and a minus-four rating in 10 games. - LA Times
In a surprising move, the Bruins have recalled winger Shawn McEachern from Providence. The 37-year-old cleared re-entry waivers and will travel with the team to Montreal for Saturday's game. McEachern, signed to a two-year deal and $1 million a year during the offseason. - Boston Herald
Injured goalie Jose Theodore has skated the past two days but hasn't set a timetable for his return with Colorado. Theodore, who fractured his right heel bone Feb. 16, still hasn't put on pads or taken any shots. "It's just being on the ice with as little pain as possible," Theodore said. "I'm pushing it a little harder every time I'm out there." The original prognosis was that Theodore would miss six to eight weeks, and eight weeks would take him to April 13 - when the Avalanche plays again at Calgary in the first game of a season-closing three-game trip. - Denver Post/Rocky Mountain News
Bill Guerin (eye injury) skated hard for the second day in a row and will accompany the team to California for the two-game trip. He will meet with his doctor Wednesday, when hopes to be cleared for contact. - Dallas Morning News
Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo is one win away from tying the franchise record for wins by a goaltender (106) held by John Vanbiesbrouck. Luongo is 32-26-9 this season, having broken Vanbiesbrouck's team record for wins in a single season five games ago. - Miami Herald
Jacques Martin said team doctors will reevaluate injured forward Jozef Stumpel when the team returns to South Florida. Stumpel will not play in the game against the Hurricanes after apparently suffering a hip flexor injury Wednesday in Pittsburgh. Stumpel has been one of the Panthers' hottest players lately, with eight goals and 14 assists in the past 15 games. - Miami Herald
Martin Brodeur posted the 437th victory of his career to tie Hall of Famer Jacques Plante for fourth place on the all-time list. The 437 career wins are 10 short of Terry Sawchuk for third place on the NHL's all-time list. Brodeur is 114 behind all-time wins leader Patrick Roy - Star Ledger
Defenseman Darius Kasparaitis, who missed four games with a strained groin before playing against the Islanders, felt uncomfortable after that game and did not dress last night. "If this was playoff hockey or if we were in desperate need of this game tonight, he could play," said coach Tom Renney. - Newsday
The Flyers said an MRI exam on Simon Gagne's left wrist was negative. He missed yesterday's practice along with Petr Nedved (groin) and Brian Savage (personal business). - Philadelphia Inquirer
The Coyotes were forced to play Tuesday without forward Dave Scatchard after he became violently ill shortly before game time. Coach Wayne Gretzky said after Wednesday's practice Scatchard won't accompany the team on its four-game trip. - East Valley Tribune
Sharks forward Alyn McCauley missed his first game since joining the Sharks on March 5, 2003, in the Owen Nolan trade with Toronto. His streak of 169 consecutive games played ranked sixth on the franchise's all-time ironman list. - Mercury News
Blues captain Dallas Drake underwent a CT scan Thursday which confirmed he has two fractured ribs and torn cartilage between the ribs after being drilled into the boards by Chicago rookie Dustin Byfuglien in the third period of Blues' 3-2 overtime defeat. The 13-year NHL veteran will miss the remainder of the Blues' games. Drake will be an unrestricted free agent after this season. - St. Louis Post Dispatch
Defensemen Dan Boyle and Pavel Kubina and forward Fredrik Modin missed Thursday's game. Neither of them participated in the morning skate. All are listed as day to day with lower-body injuries. There are murmurs Boyle and Kubina could return soon, perhaps this weekend, but that Modin might miss a few more games with what is believed to be a groin injury. - St. Petersburg Times
Capitals rookie Alex Ovechkin extended his points streak to seven games. He also moved into a fifth-place tie with Mike Gartner on the Capitals' single-season scoring list. Gartner had 94 points in 1980-81. Ovechkin needs two goals and six assists to reach 50 and 100, a plateau only one other rookie has ever achieved. Teemu Selanne totaled 76 goals and 132 points for Winnipeg in 1992-93. - Washington Post
