Late Breaking Updates and Notes for Saturday, April 1
Jeff Friesen has been a healthy scratch for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in each of the last two games. Since joining the team at the trade deadline, the 11 year NHL veteran has just one goal and one assist in 10 games. - LA Times
If the Bruins lose in regulation Saturday night, they would officially be eliminated from playoff contention. They would be left with 69 points, at least 14 fewer than Tampa Bay, New Jersey, and Montreal (all with 83 entering tonight's games), with only seven games to play. They could still finish with 83 points, but only 35 wins (victories are the first tiebreaker). The Bolts, Devils, and Habs all have more than 35 wins - Boston Globe
Canadiens goaltender Cristobal Huet has shut out the Bruins in each of their last two meetings.
It seems pretty unlikely goalie Hannu Toivonen (high ankle sprain) will play again this season. "Obviously it would be good to get some games this year," Toivonen said. "But I'm not going to force it. - Boston Herald
Carolina is 13-0-1 when Ray Whitney scores. - Herald Sun
Forward Alex Tanguay, who has missed six games because of a sprained right knee, might be able to skate next week. He was injured in March 19 at San Jose. - Rocky Mountain News
Injuries have forced the Los Angeles Kings to use nine players who had never appeared in the NHL before this season. Winger Konstantin Pushkarev is the latest to make his debut. He led Manchester of the American Hockey League in goals with 18 in 70 games at the time of his promotion. - Dallas Morning News
Brian Gionta needs six goals in nine games to break Pat Verbeek's Devils record of 46 goals scored in 1987-88. - Star Ledger
Should the Atlanta Thrashers fail to earn at least two points combined in games Saturday against Carolina and Monday in Ottawa, the New York Rangers would clinch their first playoff berth since 1996-97. - New York Post
While not much has gone right for the Pittsburgh Penguins this season, it hasn't deterred the crowds from showing up at Melon Arena. The team has average 15,824 which is 93.4 percent capacity despite a 10-21-7 home record. - Post Gazette
It's been 15 years since the Battle of Alberta was last played in the post-season. Only one player from the Oilers' roster in 1991 is still active in the NHL - Martin Gelinas.
