Late Breaking Updates and Notes for Monday, April 3
Goaltender Patrick Lalime will undergo reconstructive surgery on his left knee after an MRI revealed he has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Lalime suffered the injury in Saturday?s game at Nashville. It's the third time the Blues have lost a goalie this season because of a hit by an opponent. Curtis Sanford suffered a season-ending knee injury March 13 when he was hit by Columbus' Nikolai Zherdev. Jason Bacashihua was injured Jan. 20 during a goalmouth collision.
Richard Zednik, who hasn't scored in 13 games will be a healthy scratch tomorrow night against the Bruins. Jan Bulis will take his place.
Daniel Alfredsson did not skate with the Senators Monday morning and is a game time decision. He is suffering from the flu. If he's unable to go tonight, the Senators will likely play a man short on the bench as it's unlikely anyone could be called up in time for the game.
Carolina's Josef Vasicek is expected to make his return Monday from reconstructive knee surgery, while Doug Weight, Andrew Ladd and Niclas Wallin remain day-to-day and could return this week. - News and Observer
Washington's Alexander Ovechkin, who swapped his smoked visor for a mirrored one this week, has an eight-game scoring streak - five goals, eight assists. He needs two goals and five points to become the second rookie to record 50 goals and 100 points. Teemu Selanne had 76 goals and 132 points for Winnipeg in 1992-93. - News and Observer
Colorado coach Joel Quenneville said Peter Budaj likely would make his 11th consecutive start in goal. Budaj has allowed 28 goals in his past eight starts and was replaced by Vitaly Kolesnik in the third period of a 6-3 loss to the Flames on Friday night.
A "lower-body injury" could keep Mike Modano out of his second consecutive game Monday night. The Stars scratched Modano from Saturday night's loss, the first time he had sat out since January 2004, when a groin injury kept him out of six games. Modano leads the Stars with 72 points (27 goals, 45 assists). - Dallas Morning News
Stars RW Jere Lehtinen has hit a lull. Lehtinen does not have a point in the last five games, his second-longest scoreless streak of the season. In 16 post-Olympic games, Lehtinen has only four goals and six minus games. - Dallas Morning News
Pavol Demitra's status remains unclear, as the King forward still needs to be cleared by doctors before being allowed to play. Demitra, who has sat out eight games because of a concussion, will undergo a baseline test Monday, but said he probably won't play in the game against Vancouver. Demitra said he failed to pass the same test Saturday. Demitra has missed 22 of the last 30 games with injuries. He was the team leader in goals and points when he was injured. - Los Angeles Times
Flyers forward Petr Nedved underwent an MRI on his sore right groin after Saturday's home loss to the New Jersey Devils, and the results showed he does not have a tear. He has been dealing with a sore groin since last Tuesday night, when he injured it against Toronto. It is the same injury he has been dealing with for most of the second half of the season. - Philadelphia Inquirer
Coyotes center Mike Ricci's contract has been extended for another season. The 34 year old has a clause in the two-year deal he signed in the summer of 2004 that automatically lengthened the term one year once his minutes played this season surpassed a predetermined, undisclosed total. Ricci has played in 70 games and is averaging nearly 13 minutes per contest. Ricci will be paid between $1.5 million and $2 million in 2006-07. - Arizona Republic
