So who is the best defenceman? I believe it is a race between 2 actually...

It will most certainly go to Nick, but I have hopes that Scotty will get it!

The James Norris Memorial Trophy is an annual award given to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.
Scott and Lidstrom are light years ahead of everyone else in the league. Lidstrom is consistent year after year, but Scott came to a new team and a new system and still is performing well. Lidstroms stats are slightly better than Scotts. I'd settle for a tie here.
I'm actually surprised at Visnovsky's numbers, but I'm not sure he is an overall great defenseman. He does stand out on the Kings, that's for sure.

No one has done more for their team than Scott Niedermayer.

Scott Niedermayer, who exemplifies leadership, hard work, and passion. And he has less talent to work with than does Lidstrom.

Niedermayer, for sure. He not only is the best defenseman in the league, but because of his knee surgery during the Olympics, Canada didn't get the gold, in my homer opinion.
Seriously, Scotty is the best. Period.
I'm just saying......

I think Scotty has a shot at the Norris! But Lidstrom deserves it.

Perhaps a homer vote from Helene Elliott, but anyway ...

QUOTE
• Norris (best defenseman): Scott Niedermayer, Mighty Ducks. Runners-up: Nicklas Lidstrom, Detroit and Sergei Zubov, Dallas.
Niedermayer's return from minor knee surgery at the Olympic break fueled the Ducks' playoff run. His superb skating and smart playmaking make him an offensive catalyst. Lidstrom had his usual fine season for the Red Wings, averaging more than 28 minutes a game and scoring 79 points. Zubov was quietly productive in anchoring the Stars' defense.
