ACES TAKE 1-0 SERIES LEAD BEHIND STIFLING DEFENSE
Alaska holds Utah to just 15 shots in 4-1 victory
Alaska Aces Press Release

Anchorage, AK - Barrett Heisten and Kimbi Daniels each had a goal and an assist as Alaska gradually pulled away to a 4-1 win over Utah in Game One of the West Semi-Finals before 4,525 at Sullivan Arena.

The teams engaged in somewhat of a feeling-out process in a scoreless first period, with the Aces out-shooting the Grizzlies 8-3. Peter Metcalf set Chris Minard loose on a breakaway five minutes into the middle frame, and Minard whistled a snap shot over Utah goalie Alfie Michaud's right shoulder for a 1-0 Alaska lead. The Aces managed just one goal in 10 chances against the Grizzlies 24th-ranked penalty kill, but that lone tally, a tip-in by Heisten with 4:56 left in the period, gave Alaska a 2-0 margin heading to the final 20 minutes.

Alaska went 45-0 during the regular season when leading after two periods, and when Kimbi Daniels beat Michaud top shelf off the rush with 7:43 left in regulation, victory seemed all the more secure. But Utah, which had mustered only 12 shots in the game's first 58 minutes, took advantage of a couple of late penalties against the Aces, ending Matt Underhill's shutout bid and cutting the lead to 3-1 with 1:40 remaining when Ryan Kinasewich smacked home a rebound in a five-on-three situation.

An empty-netter by Justin Maiser ensured no miracle comeback was in the works as Alaska won for the seventh straight time in the opener of a playoff series, including six in a row under Davis Payne, who finished third in the ECHL Coach of the Year voting. The Aces and Grizzlies play in Anchorage again tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m. before the best-of-seven series shifts to the ‘E' Center just outside Salt Lake City for Games Three and Four Thursday and Friday night at 5:05 p.m. AST. Alaska has won all six meetings between the two teams this year at Sullivan Arena. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com, where all home games and selected road contests also are available on a pay-per-view basis, courtesy of B2 Networks.

Hey Amanda...Justin Maiser scored!!! Celebrate!!! banana.gif wink.gif biggrin.gif

Well, it was an empty netter...but way to go Justin! Alaska has an excellent team this year...the Grizzlies are not a pushover team by any means and the Aces aren't having much trouble with them at all. The Utah goalie, Alfie Michaud, used to be a Canuck once...!

Vancouver has had a lot of goalies...so the chances are good of seeing them around!

Alaska could see Las Vegas in the next round if the Wranglers beat Idaho. They dropped the first game against the Steelheads last night and trail the series 0-1 so who knows if they will even be moving on...would be nice to see the top two teams face off though.

The ECHL playoffs are very strange, there is a bracket in this link that makes it a bit clearer. There are more teams in the North/South divisions than the West/Pacific so they have a quarterfinal round we don't go through out here. blink.gif

ACES MOVE WITHIN ONE WIN OF WEST FINAL
Alaska cruises to 4-1 victory in Utah, leads series 3-0
Alaska Aces Press Release

Anchorage, AK -

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Chris Minard scored twice on the power play goal and Vladimir Novak added a shorthanded goal as Alaska rolled to a 4-1 win in Game Three of its best-of-seven series against Utah before 1,336 at the ‘E' Center.

As a five-on-three Utah power play expired early in the first period, Novak burst down the right wing and beat Grizzlies goaltender Alfie Michaud blocker side to give Alaska a 1-0 lead at 5:09. With the Aces enjoying a two-man advantage of their own later in the frame, Minard buried the first of his two from between the circles at 11:41.

Another five-on-three situation led to Alaska’s third goal midway through the second period, as Minard again found the top corner against Michaud, leaving the score 3-0 with 8:40 left in the period. Barely a minute later, as another Aces power play expired, Brent Henley jumped out of the box and finished off a two-on-one to put Utah on the board. But the Grizzlies never seriously threatened in the third period, managing just six shots on goal, and an empty-netter by Scott with 1:44 left in regulation accounted for the final margin.

With one five-on-five goal among its 11 in the series, Alaska can close out Utah tomorrow night at 5:05 p.m. AST. If the Grizzlies win, Game Five would be back at the ‘E’ Center Sunday at 5:05 p.m. AST.The winner of this series advances to take on the winner of Idaho-Las Vegas, with the Steelheads owning a 2-0 series lead heading back to Boise for Game Three Friday.

Alaska seems to be dominating at will in this series...Underhill is very solid in goal and the Aces have many weapons...Alex Leavitt may not be scoring too much but his presence is totally felt with assists. Go Aces!!! Complete the Sweep tomorrow night!!!

I've heard that is often true of the fighters, that they are actually good sports off the ice. There's a lot of respect between the tough guys. Fitzy and DJ King had a few fights when they were both playing in the 'Dub and now they are on the same team! They were both drafted and signed by the Blues.

Idaho is now up three games to one on Las Vegas, so it looks like the Aces will be playing the Steelheads in the next round. Upset in that matchup, Idaho was ranked 3rd. ohmy.gif

Yes it would be an upset if that happens but even the Aces didn't want to face Idaho in the First Round of the Playoffs. So there is something to be said about the Steelheads!!! hmm.gif wink.gif

Well, I see the Aces did end up with the Wranglers after all...and got beat 5-0 in the first game! They are going to have to come out better than that in this series!
QUOTE
The Las Vegas Wranglers battled Alaska for the best record in the ECHL all season, falling short by one point in the end, with the Aces earning the coveted home-ice advantage through the playoffs.

But Las Vegas erased that edge in dominant fashion Monday night, stunning Alaska in a 5-0 victory at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage to take a 1-0 lead in the West Division finals.
