Kings coach Marc Crawford filled out his coaching staff Monday, hiring Mike Johnston as associate coach, Jamie Kompon as an assistant coach and Bill Ranford as goaltending coach.

The team also hired former King Nelson Emerson as its video and player development consultant.

NHL.com -- The Stanley Cup Finalists, Carolina and Edmonton, featured clutch goaltending, mobile defenses and speedy, scoring forwards. Will that continue to be the winning NHL formula and do the Kings have the talent to play that way?

Crawford -- "If you've watched any teams that I've been involved with, they've always had an offensive flair. We'll play at a high pace and tempo. On the West Coast, you have to be able to roll four lines. The top guys will still play the most time. We have the personnel to be a pressuring style team. We still have to play to our strong suit, an active defense and great goaltending, and keep developing strong offensive talents."

The Kings and Los Angeles-based radio station KTLK/1150 have reached an agreement for KTLK to broadcast Kings games in the 2006-07 season.

KTLK/1150 will carry 2006-07 Kings exhibition, regular-season and postseason games, beginning with the Kings-Ducks exhibition game Sept.18 in Anaheim.

The Los Angeles Kings will retire Luc Robitaille's No. 20 jersey before a Jan. 20 game against the Phoenix Coyotes.

With Brian Burke running the rival Anaheim Ducks, the other club battling for the hockey dollar in La-La Land, it didn't take long for Crawford to hear from his former Vancouver Canucks boss after the Kings hired him. "He left me a couple of funny voice mail messages and probably a few that we can't share," Crawford said with a laugh.

Burke was happy to elaborate.

"It was my hope that Marc Crawford would end up in the Eastern Conference," he said Monday from his Anaheim office. "That's the respect I have for him. And that voice mail he's talking about, I just told him that we're dear friends, our wives are dear friends, but we're competing now. And we might have to overlook some things that are said and done this season.

"I can see us going after each other in the hallways," added Burke. "That's how intense we both are. So I just said let's make sure our friendship gets through this."

Returning the Los Angeles Kings to the playoffs will not only be good for hockey in southern California, but inject some excitement into a league that is struggling to keep its place in the American sports market, says new coach Marc Crawford.

"He certainly has the potential to play in the top three" on defense, Lombardi said. "The most important thing is that within his peer group, he is one of the top prospects.

Bob Miller enjoyed real star power Monday.

With a crowd of about 150 and a live television audience looking on, the Hall of Fame announcer for the Kings received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Miller, who turns 68 this month, said his contract is for three more years plus an option year.

"My greatest fear is that I retire and the Kings win a Stanley Cup the next year," he said.

At Monday's ceremony, Leiweke tried to ease that fear by telling Miller that "you have my word … before this is all over and you define your lifetime, we're going to get you a Stanley Cup."

On one hand, the Kings came out of the nightmare lockout year strong. They made money last season, for the first time under the 11-year reign of owner Philip Anschutz, played their home games in front of 99.7 percent capacity and had a 90-percent renewal rate this summer for season-ticket holders.

"What we're trying to do, in terms of marketing, is shoot with a laser. It's a more measured return. You get more out of your marketing dollars if you reach out directly to people, and that's what we're trying to do. It's more effective, in the long run, than running an ad every day in the newspaper."
