I have a pretty gory photoshop job of that pic, with a Duck holding a bloody Stanley Cup above his head, while Luongo lies in a splattered pool of his own blood.

I'm not gonna post it here... Don't wanna get banned. wink.gif

Sooo... I don't get it.

Why name Luongo captain if he can't even perform any of the captain's duties on the ice? No talking with officials, no C on the jersey, no ceremonial faceoffs, yada yada? And from what I've always heard, most goalies are leaders in the locker room anyways... so what's the point of giving him the "'C'"?
Todrick
Funny, but when i hear Luongo's name... that photo comes into my head... that's all i know him for... He's the dude who's world was crushed by Niedermania.

that and being a player who was too busy using the restroom to actually get out on the ice for the start of overtime.

How about E G O? This makes as much sense as naming Selanne starting goalie. He wouldn't wear the pads or stand between the pipes or make a save... but he could be named goalie.

I think it's all about ego.

Come to think of it, just before this marvelous picture was taken I do believe Roberto tried his Captain-cy skills by trying to lobby the refs DURING play.

Roberto is so special they made him Captain as long as it's not on the ice.
Roberto is so special he can take a leak in the middle of a playoff game.
Roberto is so special he doesn't have to actually win a Stanley Cup to be thought of as so special.
Roberto is so special he could be traded tomorrow to the Queens and wags would immediately claim that LA is a cup contender this season.
Roberto is so special he will be the first goalie in the Hall of Fame to have actually done nothing so special.

Thank you! OMG, people here in FLORIDA STILL think he's a God, and I don't get why! He did NOTHING for the Panthers, I mean, c'mon! Giguere CARRIED the Ducks, what has Luongo done?

Oh, that's right, he's the Captain of the Canucks rolleyes.gif

Vancouver captain Luongo, forbidden by NHL rules from wearing the letter on his jersey because he is a goaltender, sported a new C on his mask, but said after the game the letter stands for "Canucks"

<source>

QUOTE
"It can stand for whatever he wants it to stand for," said Canucks general manager Mike Gillis, when asked whethr the C stood for Canucks or captain.

The dark blue C is located on the bottom of Luongo's mask in the area that protects his throat. It is clearly separate from the mask's painted design and resembles the plain letter that a captain usually wears on a jersey.

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired defenceman Shane O'Brien and right wing Michel Ouellet from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for defenceman Lukas Krajicek and right wing Juraj Simek.

O'Brien will report to Vancouver and Ouellet will report to the team's AHL affiliate in Manitoba.

O'Brien, 25, spent the 2007-08 season with the Tampa Bay Lightning, recording 21 points in 77 games. The Port Hope, Ontario-native has played in 158 NHL games, scoring six goals and 31 assists for a total of 37 points and recording 330 penalty minutes. TSN

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

Their plan must be to not have real defenseman, and just have their goalies going all season.

Sure looks like it with the 80 shots they allowed in their first two games...

Wasn't there a team several seasons ago that was near the top of the league in goal scoring, but was also near the top in goals allowed?

I can't remember which team that was, for the life of me. It was a ridiculous team. (It was definitely within the past ten seasons.)

I'm not being sarcastic -- I'm dead serious. There was a team like that.

I think they struggled to make the playoffs... (Could it be the NY Rangers, when they had the highest payroll in the league? Hmm.)

NHL.com has standings on their web site dating back much farther than they used to, some of the really expensive Ranger teams in the aftermath of their Cup win over the Canucks were highly paid underacheivers.

But look no further than the 2007-2008 Senators for an example, 261 Goals For was the second highest in the East last season but their 247 goals allowed was the highest of any playoff team.

Also: The 1998-99 Maple Leafs led the East in scoring, but were third worst in the conference in goals allowed (268/231). They finished with a #4 seed. The 1996-1997 Penguins Led the whole NHL in goals scores but were next to last in the league in goals allowed (285/280), many Penguin teams of the 90's and early 2000's were in similar, though not as extreme situations.

So, dragging this thing back on topic....namely, Sundin signing with Vancouver:

Here's a scenario. Sundin talks with Brian Burke a month or so ago when he had about 3 real prospective teams looking at him (Vancouver, Toronto, Philly). Mats asks then Anaheim GM Burke what he thought about Vancouver and how he would fit in. Burkie tells Sundin that his best bet would be Vancouver and gave Mats a lot of background into that organization and the players. He also tells Sundin that going with either the Rangers or Flyers would just put him back into the limelight, especially in New York.

Sundin mulls all this over and goes with Vancouver. In the meantime, Burke leaves the Western Conference for Toronto and now his new team doesn't have to face Sundin in the East more than once a year. Works out pretty good for Burkie once again! Could it be that Burkie was ticked about not being invited to Vancouver because he knew he had a hand in giving the Canucks a really big Christmas present? hmm.gif

Of course, Burke can't claim this because he's a moral, straight-talking guy and all. wink.gif
Duckbill
Vancouver was already a leading contender to get Sundin even before all that though, and the idea of playing out West and avoiding any drama associated with a return to Toronto probably figured in as well, not to mention that if Burke was really as crooked as some people think he is he woul dhave just noted how the Leafs have improved and told him to take a discount to sign there.

I honestly think that if Burke told Sundin to go to Vancouver, then it was because he was genuine. I've never seen any GM do something for a player like what Burke did for Bryz, getting him a #1 spot as promised, so this to me is not much of a stretch at all.

New Vancouver centre Mats Sundin skated with the Canucks Tuesday morning, but he will not play tonight against the Philadephia Flyers.

At this point, there is no hard date for Sundin's first game action with Vancouver, but he will not be going on the road with the team Wednesday. Sundin's next skate is scheduled for Sunday, but he won't play that night against Dallas, either.

Sundin said the final call on the timing his Vancouver debut was with the coaching staff.

The Vancouver Canucks cleared room for Mats Sundin to join the lineup this week, sending forward Jannik Hansen to Manitoba of the American Hockey League on Monday.

Sundin, who signed as a free agent on Dec. 18 and joined the team Dec. 30, had his first full practice on Monday. He said he would travel with the team to Wednesday night's game at Edmonton, but there was no word if the longtime Toronto captain would play.

While head coach Alain Vigneault refused to place the blame on the shoulders of their prize free agent signing, he admitted that the constant media barrage surrounding Sundin has caused issues.

"It's pretty obvious that since the day we signed him and the day that he arrived in Vancouver that there has been a lot of focus and attention paid to him and his progression," Vigneault told reporters. "In my mind it has had some effect, but not to the extent to put the blame on that we're not winning now as much as I think we should."
