Clemmensen, who'll be an unrestricted free agent, said he wouldn't rule out re-signing with the Devils this summer.

"It still is a possibility," he said. "I don't harbor any ill will with New Jersey. Am I surprised? Yeah. Maybe a little upset. If (re-signing) is an option to me, I will definitely look into it. I'm not going to rule that out. That's kind of a long way off right now."

Court deals Devils' Brodeur alimony blow

TRENTON, New Jersey — Days after breaking the NHL record for wins by a goalie, the Devils' Martin Brodeur has been dealt an alimony setback by a New Jersey appeals court.

The court ruled that Brodeur must pay his ex-wife $500,000 a year until 2020.

A lower court originally awarded Brodeur's ex-wife, Melanie DuBois, limited alimony.

Brodeur appealed, asking that he only be required to pay alimony until he retires, which he estimated to be in 2012. DuBois asked for alimony payments until 2024, when their youngest is anticipated to graduate from college.

The court ordered Brodeur to pay alimony until 2020, the year the youngest child graduates high school.

I tend to be somewhat red-necked, but not so sure that the dollar amount isn't a proper determination. All the zeros behind the number make it seem crazy, but put in perspective it's not outrageous. To me, what we pay people to play games is the truly outrageous (and just look at our politicians... ).

What I question is the number of years he is ordered to pay that amount. Through the end of his current contract, sure. But for 8 more years after that? Maybe the court leaves it up to him to seek relief from the award after his income goes down?

But I relate to your initial reaction. That's a damn big number.

I can understand it for child support, but for alimony? Well, I have my opinions about alimony and I'll admit that biases me. This sure does make a strong case for A. Get a freakin' prenup and B. It's cheaper to keep her.

Brendan Shanahan will be back with the Devils in 2009-10.

The 40-year-old unrestricted free agent left wing has agreed to terms and will be ready to go for the start of training camp on Sept. 12, an NHL source said. The sides spent Tuesday finalizing the paperwork and the official announcement could come later today.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said last week that he wanted Shanahan, who had received interest from other teams, to be sure about returning to the Devils and the role he would be playing, but expected something to happen by the end of this week.

Shanahan will be returning for a 22nd NHL season. He is the league's active leader with 656 regular season goals...

They employ the winningest goalie ever, a guy who has more shutouts than any man that ever played in the league, and who just happens to play virtually every game.

The Devs have their games broadcast by the best American play by play man of his era, and maybe ever.

And yet...they draw only when the opponent is the draw - which apparently is rare. Most nights, in the shiney new Pridential Cemter, they draw flies.

This isn't some sunbelt expansion club we're talking about. And after all, isn't winning supposed to be your best marketing tool?

A night when they honored their 2000 Cup winning team and had many of the members in attendance for the pregame ceremony. A night in which Brodeur bumped his shutout record to a staggering 106. Quite bluntly, a night that deserved to have more people present...
