Nicklas Backstrom, the Capitals' top draft pick last month, informed the club Monday he won't be coming to Washington next season but will instead continue playing in his native Sweden for another year.
The news was not totally unexpected but does not bode well for the rebuilding Capitals, who are in need of speed and skill at the center position. The 18-year-old Backstrom was taken fourth overall and was pegged as the eventual setup man for star left wing Alex Ovechkin.

Ovechkin says he's not ready for 'C'QUOTE
Both the Washington Post and Washington Times speculated in July that head coach Glen Hanlon was considering handing the captaincy to Ovechkin, chosen last season's top rookie in the NHL. Fellow phenom Sidney Crosby is reportedly a candidate for captain in Pittsburgh.
Ovechkin says it won't happen for him this season.

Chris Clark named captain of WashingtonQUOTE
The 30-year-old winger becomes the 13th captain in franchise history after Jeff Halpern left via free agency this summer.
''The true leader in our dressing room has always been our goalie Olaf Kolzig but it's a technicality (league rules) that he can't be the captain,'' Clark told The Canadian Press on Wednesday. ''So I really had not thought too much about it until Monday when (coach) Glen Hanlon called me in for a meeting and told me about it. It's a huge honour.''

That very question stumped Washington Capitals coach Glen Hanlon, who paused 5 seconds before giving an answer.

Ovechkin on a SegwayQUOTE
"Hey Segway guy," the Park Police officer was shouting at Alex Ovechkin. "You can't ride in there."
Ovechkin, wearing his red Caps jersey and yes, riding a Segway, scooted out of the tourist-dotted maze that encircles the National Christmas tree, smiling his gap-toothed smile.
"I'm sorry officer, he got away from me," apologized Mary Ann Melville, a tour guide from Capital Segway.
The officer gave a stern lecture, something about where and where not to ride your Segway, and about how his sergeant was getting irritated. Ovechkin scooted about in circles and waited for the speech to end.
"All right, see you!" he finally said to the officer, and sped off.

I live in DC most of the year and watch a lot of Caps games, and in my opinion, he's worth that kind of a deal. Every night, his opponents constantly cover him with their best defenders, knowing that he's the Caps only real scoring threat, and yet he's on pace for more than 60 goals. He's not a set-up man like Crosby, but he's more of a complete player than Kovalchuk. I think this move makes total sense from the Caps point of view, Caps fans are loving it, and I think it even makes some sense for Ovechkin, considering that the Caps could actually be really good in the future. I don't get 13 years, I wouldn't want to tie myself to something that long and probably would have preferred half a dozen at most, but I understand where he's coming from.

You say that now, but during the 03-04 season I'm pretty sure alot of the Ducks players didn't think that they were going to win the Cup.
That being said, any team can win the Cup, even Washington.
As long as Crosby doesn't win the cup before Ovechkin I'm fine.
OT: BTW, I have no problem with Crosby, I think that he's a great player, he just needs to stop the bitching and complaining, grow a set, and play like a man. I have a problem with the Penguins, and every team from Pittsburgh for that matter. Ever since I was about 5-6 years old I always liked the Ducks, and my best friend always liked the Penguins, everytime I would go over to his place he had Penguins stuff everywhere. He always said that the Ducks were never going to win the Cup and I always said that the Penguins were going to suck for a long time. (I guess we are tied, the Ducks won the Cup and the Penguins haven't sucked that much)

You might think that over 9 million a year is excessive, but for a player of Ovechkin's talent to be locked for so long is huge, especially given that the Salary Cap is going to go up. There is a chance that Ovechkin's salary in a few years will be quite friendly to the Capitals. The other thing to consider is that by keeping Ovechkin, and not letting him depart anytime soon, Washington is showing a committment to the fans and is likely going to sell more tickets and jerseys than they would have otherwise.
Washington might not win the cup any time soon but then again with Ovechkin there long term he'll be playing there long after soon ends. What legitimate cup contender could even find the cash to sign him anyways? Ovechkin was almost guranteed to land a Crosby-type deal no matter where he went but there aren't many, if any, big time contenders who could have picked him up.
Plus, and I say this only half jokingly, anyone who says Ovechkin isn't worth $9 million a year wasn't there when he beat the Ducks 3-2 in overtime with his OT goal clinching the hat trick two years ago.

According to the terms of the agreement, Ovechkin has what is described as a "modified no trade clause."
Prior to July 1, 2014 the Capitals have the luxury and sole discretion of trading Ovechkin to any team in the league.
However, the language in the contract goes on to read that during the month of June 2014, Ovechkin can provide Washington with a list of up to 10 NHL teams to which he does not want to be traded to during each of the seasons after July 1, 2014, commencing with the 2014-2015 season.

I think Washington has a pretty bright future, actually. Apart from Ovechkin, Semin (super talented but hasn't put it together yet), Backstrom (third in rookie scoring, soon to pass injured Toews), and Green (current goal-scoring leader among all NHL defensemen and still good in his own zone) are great young players, and Fleischmann could turn out really good too. They also have a few really promising prospects who are still in the minors. If you can keep them all together, that's a heck of a good core group to build around. I think the deal is so great for DC not just because it keeps the best goalscorer of this generation here but because it'll actually probably be underpaying him half a dozen years down the line after the cap goes up, freeing up room to resign their other good players or look for new ones that otherwise probably wouldn't have been there.
I mean, the Caps just swept the season series from Ottawa. I watched all those games, and they weren't flukes; the Caps played well offensively and defensively and really did look like the better team. I called them to make the playoffs at the start of this season, and I'm sticking with it.

The Capitals were very busy on deadline day, making four deals.
Montreal G Cristobal Huet for Washington 2009 2nd round pick
Columbus C/RW Sergei Fedorov for Washington prospect Theo Ruth
Vancouver LW/RW Matt Cooke for Washington LW Matt Pettinger
Atlanta C Alexandre Giroux for Washington C Joe Motzko
I think the Caps made off like bandits today, making a considerable improvement for next to nothing. They didn't directly address their major need for help on the blue line, but they got a legitimate starting goaltender, an established and still very defensively sound winger with two Selke trophies in Fedorov, and a tough and spirited winger in Cooke. Olie Kolzig was one of the premier goaltenders in the NHL for a dozen years, but he's fallen off, and the addition of the younger Huet will really help out. Fedorov doesn't have the same offensive skills that he did in his heyday, but he'll make a great second-line winger in a new Russian connection with Alexander Semin and Viktor Kozlov, and he'll be a valuable addition on the penalty kill. Cooke has better stats and a tougher presence, and should be a good addition to the Caps third or fourth line.
All in all, this should help them shave off a good chunk of their more than 3 goals against per game, and I think they'll overtake Carolina for the division title.
The downside is that all of these players will be unrestricted free agents come July 1, but I don't see why any of them would want to leave (unless Fedorov plans to retire). Washington has an extremely promising future, and in my opinion they're only a year or two of maturity and one or two d-men away from being among the class of the Eastern Conference.
