Money trumps tributes to St. Albert NHL stars

Mark Messier and Troy Murray may have won Stanley Cups and a host of player awards in their hockey careers.

But both retired NHL stars will soon lose a namesake ice rink in the city where they were junior hockey players.

The City of St. Albert is selling the naming rights to the Mark Messier and Troy Murray arenas.

After a public backlash that included being slammed in Sports Illustrated, an Alberta community is dumping a plan to sell off the naming rights to two hockey rinks that bear the names of former NHL players Mark Messier and Troy Murray.

The city has also sent letters of apology to both men.
