Full Version: The Goalies Shall Adjust ...

"I guess the shooters will see a little more," St. Louis Blues goalie Patrick Lalime said this week. "It's been a bit of an adjustment, but I don't think it will be that much of a factor.

"I'm glad they didn't go for the bigger nets, which would have been a really big adjustment for us," he added.
...
Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars said smaller pads haven't changed how he positions himself in the net, but admits that "every once in a while, where I used to make a save, the puck might glance off me or go in the net.

"I'll blame that on smaller equipment when I get into the regular season."
...
Brodeur said restricting puck-handling by goalies will be toughest on the defencemen, who will risk taking major hits from onrushing forwards when they skate back to the corners to collect the puck.

"Goalies can't help them out any more, so you'll see a lot more banging and maybe your top defencemen getting hurt," he said.
...
And if reports are true they may start selling advertising space on goaltenders' jerseys?

"If I get a cut, it's not bad," Brodeur said.

With the pads being smaller I think we can only fit A** on the pads! biggrin.gif

Yesterday was like the first day of high school, as Scott Gomez put it. To Martin Brodeur, however, day one in the new NHL had to feel a little like detention.

"Guys have played the way it was for how many years?" Roloson said. "Now we've got to get the protractor out, the compass set out, and start making arcs on the ice and figure out the angles. I rely a lot on angles. It's just something you've got to get used to."

Poor guy,

I'm so sick of Brody complaining! And now he's trying to pass it off as concern that the defensemen will get hurt? Oh please! rolleyes.gif

"It seemed with the big jerseys and the loose fitting pads and the loose fitting chest protectors and arm pads and all the extra things sewn on, pucks no longer deflected off a goalie and in," Red Wings forward Brendan Shanahan said. "Once they touched a goalie, they somehow got swallowed up by something underneath that giant jersey."

So how many will switch back to their old bigger equipment for the Olympics??

QUOTE
Goalies will be allowed to wear the big equipment at the Olympics in 2006. Don't moth ball those flaps, pads and pieces of wood just yet. If the NHL goalies are smart, and I have no doubt that they are. The short Olympic tournament is no time to start trying out new equipment, play with what you have.

On a day that featured only the team's five goaltenders and five shooters on the ice, trying to get in the way of elusive white pucks was one of a handful of new drills.

"It's a little different," said new Blues goalie Patrick Lalime of the new puck color. "I hope they're not trying to push that in regular games. It's a little different, especially with harder shots where you see just a little bit of shadow.

"You kind of know where it's going, but you're not 100 percent sure all the time. It works on your reflexes."

Allain had a method to his madness, borrowing the drill from one he had seen before.

"It's something I've seen in the past and something I've thought about doing," he said. "Focus is real important for goaltenders, being able to see and focus on the puck. I've done some other focus drills in the past, but never white pucks."

Bah, that's nothing. Try to adjust to clear pucks rolleyes.gif

The Stars had their first full-team scrimmage Friday, and it quickly turned into a blowout. Marty Turco gave up seven goals in 45 minutes of ice time as his team lost 10-2.

NHL's new standings format means goalies no longer take loss in overtime

There will be no tie games with the introduction of the shootout this season. Instead, the NHL will record standings under three columns: W (wins), L (losses in regulation time) and OT (overtime and shootout losses).

Goalies will also carry the three-column record.

<link>
Francaise
What? I would have thought goalies would get a loss. Boy, that changes how stats go. Hey, you let zee goals in, yee should LOSE! I thought it was the GAA wouldn't be affected.
hockey2k
I agree Frankie...but I think the loss should go on the goalie's and the team's record. A loss is a loss weather it happens in 60 minutes or 80 IMO. Two columns only..."W" and "L"

In the current game points earning situation, a problem with just two columns is trying to figure out if a team has earned an overtime loss (regulation tie) point or not for the standings.

Any chance they will go to Euro system:

Win - 3
Win in OT or PS - 2
Loss in OT or PS - 1
Loss - 0

But I think that whole system is a load of BS. Here's what I propose: Win=2 points, Loss=0 points. I don't care if it happened in regulation or OT. Either you win, or you lose. Simple.

I've often wondered if this would make a regulation win more valuable for the standings.

"Paul Kariya of the Nashville Predators says he can't forget the first time he saw the new goalie equipment while skating in Anaheim last month.

"Steve Shields was there and he's a big guy," Kariya said Tuesday from Nashville. "He came out with the new blocker and glove and it almost looked like he was wearing kids' gloves."

I have a way to solve this problem: YES! We confess! His gear was overwhelmingly huge!!! JSG was walking around with two couches strapped to his legs and a California King-Size matress under his jersey. When the league measured his pads and equipment and it was found legal (actually 1" below legal) it was because it was measured by a blind guy with a propensity for lying.

The next year while wearing the same &$#@ equipment JSG let all those goals in because he needed to divert attention from the couches etc. Oddly enough, no one complained about them.

So there. We confessed. JSG will be playing in his underroos this season because that seems to be the only way to make all the experts happy.

Now shut the F*CK UP!
